Sixteen wickets fell on the first day of Australia's A second tour match, with Alister McDermott, son of former Australia international Craig, claiming figures of 4 for 38. Slow left-armer Jon Holland also took three wickets, as Durham were dismissed for 197 but that looked a decent score after the tourists lost their top six for less than 100.
Tim Paine and Nathan Coulter-Nile were the batsmen fighting save the Australia A innings, after Mark Wood claimed 4 for 22 in his eight overs. Opener Liam Davis made 40 as Australia A reached 69 for 1 before losing five wickets for 25 runs.
Having narrowly failed to win their opening three-day match against Derbyshire, Australia A made five changes to the side for their trip to the north east. Three of those were bowlers, and McDermott, Holland and Coulter-Nile claimed nine wickets between them as no one made more than Johann Myburgh's 34 for Durham.
