Sean Dickson fell just 14 runs short of Bill Ashdown's Kent individual record of 332, made against Essex at Brentwood in 1934, when he plundered 318 against Northants at Beckenham in 2017. But Dickson did pass another gigantic Ashdown innings, 305 not out against Derbyshire at Dover in 1935, to register Kent's highest innings in a home match. There was the county's biggest stand to celebrate, too, as Dickson put on 382 with Joe Denly in a Kent innings that topped 700 and created another home record.

Dickson certainly had a habit of going big - albeit occasionally. He struck an unbeaten double century against Derbyshire in May 2016 to encourage Kent's optimism that they had found a middle order batsman to be reckoned with. Three Championship centuries in their 2018 promotion year did nothing to dispel the notion.

Dickson, who has a UK passport as his mother is from Kent, was playing club cricket in the East Anglian Premier League before earning a trial spell at Kent in 2015. By the end of the season, he had forced his way into the Championship side and, although he played only four innings, displayed promise by topping the county averages.

He signed for Durham in 2020, intially on loan, but moved south again ahead of the 2023 summer in order to be closer to his fiancé and his daughter. Somerset offered him a three-year deal in the hope that he could add some ballast to their flimsy batting line-up.
