Johannesburg-born but eligible to represent Greece, Ari Karvelas had played for Gauteng in South Africa as well as a number of county 2nd XI sides before being handed a chance by injury-hit Sussex midway through the 2022 season. Karvelas proceeded to take 20 wickets in nine Royal London Cup matches as Sussex reached the semi-finals of the competition, with the tall seamer awarded a permanent deal at the end of the season.
