Hussey leads magnificent Northants fightback

Mike Hussey's gritty 122 held up the first division leaders Yorkshire on another fascinating day's CricInfo Championship cricket at Wantage Road.

The 26-year-old Australian boosted his run-tally to 413 in four innings as Northamptonshire recovered strongly from the depths of 91-5 just after lunch - only 35 in front - to 298 all out at the close.

It left Yorkshire needing 243 for victory on the last day, and the three-day defeat of title rivals Lancashire at the hands of Kent should offer them a powerful incentive to reach their target.

Hussey was at the crease for nearly six-and-a-half hours, hitting 19 fours in his 273-ball knock. It was his second ton of the summer - following 159 off Glamorgan's attack in the previous game - and the 15th of his first-class career.

He added 87 in only 18 overs with Graeme Swann, whose 55 from 48 deliveries was the first time he had passed the half-century mark since July 28 last year. Then Paul Taylor (21) dug in to help Hussey in a 70-run partnership for the eighth wicket, much to Yorkshire's obvious frustration.

Hussey looked set to carry his bat until he failed to make contact with a Steve Kirby full toss just before the close and departed leg-before.

Kirby then removed last man Jason Brown to wrap up the innings and set the scene for what promises to be an absorbing final day as Yorkshire chase their first Championship win at Northampton since 1984.
