Ed Smith, the former England batsman, has been named as the new Middlesex captain for the 2007 season.
Smith, 29, takes over from Ben Hutton who resigned after Middlesex were relegated from the first division of both the Championship and the Pro40 league in 2006.
Smith told the BBC: "It is a real honour to be invited to captain. I'll be giving it everything I have. We have a talented group of players and I'm looking forward to us playing attractive and successful cricket in 2007 and beyond."
Middlesex chief executive Vinny Coddrington said that the appointment of Smith, who won three Test caps against South Africa in 2003, was part of an "extensive review" that the county had taken since the end of the summer, and that he had been chosen from "a list of strong candidates".
He added: "We are confident that Ed will be at the forefront of a revival in our fortunes, and he is committed to leading us back to where we belong."
Smith spent nine seasons at Kent before joining Middlesex in 2005 after reports of dressing-room clashes at Canterbury.
His appointment caps a good week for the county, who have also persuaded Richard Johnson to re-sign for 2007 following a spell at Somerset. Chaminda Vaas and Murali Kartik are already in place as overseas players as the county get set for a double promotion push in 2007.
