AUSTRALIA v KENYA

At Vishakhapatnam, February 23

15-Apr-1997
At Vishakhapatnam, February 23. Australia won by 97 runs. Toss: Kenya.
Australia finally opened their campaign and Kenya provided them with a valuable workout. Backed up by tight fielding, their opening bowlers dismissed Taylor and Ponting inside eight overs. But the Waugh twins gradually flowered to add 207 in 32 overs - the first double-century partnership in World Cup history. Mark scored 130 from 128 balls, striking 14 fours and a six; in support, Steve hit 82 in 88. Australia's 304 did not scare Kenya, however. Though they also lost two early wickets, including star batsman Steve Tikolo. Otieno and Maurice Odumbe put on 102. Over for over, they kept ahead up to the halfway mark. Odumbe made 50 in 53 balls and Otieno might have reached a century but for cramp. After 50 overs keeping wicket and another 35 batting, he limped off, collapsing on the boundary. Later, Otieno resumed with a runner, but McGrath yorked him for 85, which featured a six and eight fours. Australia had a more worrying casualty: McDermott's recurrent calf injury forced him off after five overs and he soon flew home.
Man of the Match: M. E. Waugh.
