Hugh Morris has been appointed as the new "Technical Director of Cricket" for the England and Wales Cricket Board. The 34 year old will succeed Mickey Stewart in this post during November, and he beat a strong field which included Phil Neale, Martyn Moxon, and Kim Barnett. Hugh will now oversee the ECB`s Development of Excellence programme, with a brief to identify gifted young players and be directly responsible for the raising of the standards of coaching at all levels of the game.

Hugh made his Glamorgan debut in 1981, and since then he has scored 19,785 runs in his first-class career, which included 3 appearances for England in 1991. In his final game for Glamorgan at Taunton last summer, Hugh equalled Alan Jones` club record of 52 centuries, and he ended his playing career on a high as Glamorgan won the Championship. Hugh led the county in two spells between 1986 and 1995, and he was at the helm in 1993 when they won the Sunday League title for the first time in their history.

Hugh also set a number of batting records for the Welsh county. He finished his career in 4th place in the club`s alltime list of run scorers in first-class cricket, with 18,520 runs and Championship hundreds against every other county except Surrey. In 1990 he scored a record seasonal aggregate of 2,276 runs for Glamorgan, and in recent seasons he has shared the country`s most productive opening partnership with Steve James. Hugh also hit a club record of 8,866 runs in all limited overs games, with 13 one-day centuries, and with 5,447 runs was the club`s highest ever scorer in the Sunday League.

Hugh has made a fantastic contribution to Glamorgan cricket, and the outstanding efforts of this talented left-hander have gone a long way towards Glamorgan`s recent run of success. He now has the chance of translating this on a national stage by raising the standard of coaching and talent spotting.

Another person to have played his final game for Glamorgan is wicket-keeper Colin Metson. The 34 year old announced today that he will be ending his playing connections with the Welsh county at the end of his Benefit Year. Metson joined Glamorgan from Middlesex in 1987, and immediately secured both a regular place, and his county cap. During his eleven summers with Glamorgan, he established a high standard of wicket-keeping, and many felt Colin was unlucky not to have his talent recognised by the England selectors.

During his career with Glamorgan, Metson took 509 catches and made 49 stumpings. He also holds the Glamorgan record for the most number of dismisssals in both an innings and a match - claiming 7 in an innings against Derbyshire in 1991, and 9 in the matches with Worcestershire in 1993 and Surrey in 1995. Another record in his name is the most number of runs without conceeding a bye, achieved in 1996 as Yorkshire amassed 536-8 declared.

Glamorgan C.C.C. have also announced that Matthew Maynard has been re-appointed as the club captain for 1998, and that both Darren Thomas and Dean Cosker have agreed extensions to their contracts until the end of the 1999 season.
