Glamorgan have announced their fixture list for 1998 as they defend the County Championship title won last summer.

All of the venues have been finalised, except for the match in early July against Surrey. Club Chairman David Morgan will meet this coming week with officials from Swansea City Council to discuss the possibility of Swansea staging this match, and raising significant support from the West Wales business community. If no agreement is reached, it will mean that 1998 will be the first ever season when the St.Helen`s ground will not be staging a county match in the club`s Championship history.

Yet as Tony Dilloway, Glamorgan`s Director of Marketing explained, "the committee remains committed to see county cricket taking place in Swansea, but we need to seek assurances before we can proceed. Although we believe it is important to play some cricket at other venues, the substantial investment at Sophia Gardens means it is imperative for any such matches to be financially attractive to the club."

Of the outgrounds already allocated a match, Pontypridd will host the Axa Life League match with Leicestershire on June 21st, whilst Colwyn Bay will be the venue for the County Championship and Axa Life League games with Lancashire from July 22nd until July 26th. The picturesque Abergavenny ground has not been allocated a match for 1998, but it is likely that it will re-appear in 1999, and rotate on a two year basis with Colwyn Bay.
