There was good news and bad news this morning for three members of the club
as the England selectors announced their squads for the winter tours. Robert Croft, who made his England debut in the third and Final Test against Pakistan has been rewarded for an excellent season by being included in the England party for their winter tour to Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Croft, who also played in the three one-day internationals against the Pakistanis is the only specialist off-spinner in
the England squad, and will team up with Middlesex left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell who has been
recalled to the Test party.
Good news too for Glamorgan physiotherapist Dean Conway who will be accompanying the
England A tour to Australia, but there was no place for Matthew Maynard in either party.
There had been speculation in the Press that Matthew would lead the A team 'down under',
but the captaincy has gone instead to Surrey's Adam Hollioake. Even so, Matthew Maynard will be playing cricket overseas this winter as he has agreed to play for Otago in New Zealand, and Glamorgan supporters will hopefully be able to follow the fortunes of the Glamorgan skipper through a hot link from this Glamorgan cricket page to the Otago cricket page, which can be found elsewhere on Cricinfo. On Monday, the St.Helen's Balconiers held their annual Presentation Evening at Swansea University. Matthew Maynard was voted Player of the Year, whilst Gary Butcher won the award for the Most Improved Player. Alun Evans was awarded the Second Eleven Player of the Year prize, whilst special awards went to Robert Croft on his selection for England, Owen Parkin for his marvellous bowling performance on his Sunday League debut against Sussex and to Tony Cottey and Ottis Gibson for their record breaking partnership against Leicestershire.
