Matthew Maynard has set the first club record of the new season, by announcing that his Benefit Year last year raised a mammoth £153,000. The previous best by a Glamorgan player was £118,837 raised by Hugh Morris in 1994. The table below shows how Benefots have steadily risen over the past two decade.

HIGHEST BENEFITS/TESTIMONIALS FOR GLAMORGAN

  • 1980 35,000 A.Jones
  • 1986 35,230 J.A.Hopkins
  • 1991 60,000 G.C.Holmes
  • 1989 72,000 R.C.Ontong
  • 1994 118,837 H.Morris
  • 1996 153,000 M.P.Maynard
One player likely to be sitting out much of the 1997 season is young all-rounder Andrew Davies. He badly aggravated an old injury shoulder during the winter, and the result is that Davies will undergo corrective surgery in the coming week. The 20 year old is likely to be out of action until August, leaving Glamorgan`s bowling reserves very thin. Steffan Jones will be up at Cambridge until the end of June, off-spinner Gareth Edwards is completing his degree studies in London, whilst Simon Jones is still at Millfield School. Glamorgan`s supporters will be hoping that Steve Watkin, Owen Parkin, Darren Thomas, Robert Croft, Dean Cosker and of course Waqar Younis do not pick up an injury in the first few weeks of the season.
