"We have been looking to strengthen the squad with a couple of signings," said captain Matthew Maynard, "and I`m delighted that Keith has agreed to join us. We feel there is a tremendous wealth of talent coming through at Glamorgan, but if there is a player we feel will add something to the squad we have to be interested. Having seen Keith play, I think he is an underrated cricketer, and having spoken to one or two people whose opinions I respect, I have no doubt he has the all-round potential to suggest he will play an important part in our fortunes on the field over the next few years. He`s enthusiastic about the new challenge and I`m pleased to have him on board."
Newell himself was also pleased to be joining the Welsh county. "Glamorgan have a very good side, having won the Championship a couple of seasons ago, and I know they had a difficult time with injuries in 1998, but they also impressed me with the way they sold the Club. Their plans to develop the ground are very impressive and they are clearly a forward-thinking and ambitious County and I am looking forward to linking up with the players in Cape Town in the Spring. I have no doubt I will be able to work well with both Matthew Maynard and Duncan Fletcher and feel sure I can make a significant contribution with both bat and ball."
