A week after hearing about his selection for the Ashes tour, Robert Croft will miss the remaining matches of the season. Croft missed yesterday's AXA League game in Durham following a scan on a niggling knee complaint, the result of which has highlighted a tiny cartilage tear. Although the short term prognosis was good, the England team departs for Australia within six weeks and having consulted with the England management, Glamorgan's medical advisers felt that it was sensible to correct the defect now.

Secretary Mike Fatkin said:"Obviously this is disappointing to the Club coming at this stage of the season and on top of what has been an unbelievable summer from the point of view of player injuries, but in view of the amount of cricket which Robert has ahead of him this winter and on into the World Cup during the first half of next summer it is important for him, and for the England management, to have the problem sorted out as soon as possible."

"He will go into hospital tomorrow for a straightforward arthroscopy, which should have him up and about within a few days and although it will mean him missing the games against Derbyshire and Somerset he will definitely be ready for the Ashes tour. It comes as another blow to us, following what seems to have been a succession of injury problems throughout the summer, but it is in Robert's longer term interests to be fully fit in time for the tour to Australia and we felt that this was the most important factor."

Steve James has signed a new contract with Glamorgan which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2002 season. The opening batsman is just one of several players to have signed new agreements with the club, with the others including Adrian Dale, Wayne Law, Andrew Davies, Owen Parkin and Simon Jones. Discussions are also taking place over extended contracts with Dean Cosker and Darren Thomas, who both won selection last week on the England A tour this winter to Zimbabwe and South Africa. The two players already have contracts with Glamorgan which run into next summer.
