Matthew Maynard has gained another major honour by being nominated as one of Wisden`s Five Cricketers of the Year for 1997, alongside Graham Thorpe of Surrey and England, plus Australians Stuart Law, Glenn McGrath and Matthew Elliott.

The Glamorgan captain was delighted to receive this most prestigious honour. "It`s an award which is normally associated for performances in Test cricket, so I`m very pleased to have been given it for leading the Glamorgan side to the County Championship last summer. I`m even more proud given that being one of Wisden`s five is a world-wide award, and one which is not just restricted to performances in English cricket."

Matthew is the 11th Glamorgan cricketer to be nominated as one of Wisden`s Five - the others were Jack Mercer (1927), Maurice Turnbull (1931), Ossie Wheatley (1969), Majid Khan (1970), Don Shepherd (1970), Roy Fredericks (1974), Alan Jones (1978), Javed Miandad (1982), Alan Butcher (1991) and Steve Watkin (1994). Cyril Walters was also included in 1934, when he was playing for Worcestershire, whilst Viv Richards won the honour in 1977 when playing for Somerset.

Gerard Elias has succeeded David Morgan as Glamorgan`s Chairman. Elias has been Deputy Chairman for the past few seasons, and he was elected as Chairman at the club`s recent A.G.M.
