The New Year has started with some good news for one past and one present Glamorgan cricketer.Ossie Wheatley, who captained the Welsh county from 1961 until 1966, has been awarded the C.B.E. in the Queen's New Year Honours List. The former right arm seam bolwer took 1,099 wickets during his first-class career from 1956 until 1970, during which time he also played for Warwickshire, the Gentlemen , the M.C.C. and Cambridge University, where he won a Blue in 1957 and 1958. In 1969 Wheatley was one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year, whilst in 1973 and 1974 he served as a Test selector. From 1977 until 1983 he acted as Glamorgan's Chairman, and he is currently a Trustee of the Club. The 61 year old has also acted as Chairman of the T.C.C.B. and is currently Chairman of the Sports Council for Wales.

Robert Croft finished as England's leading wicket-taker in the Test series with Zimbabwe which finished earlier this week. The off-spinner took 8 wickets at 22.25 in the two drawn Tests, and in all of the first-class games on the Zimbabwe leg of their tour, Robert took 16 wickets at 21.81, with only Yorkshire's Darren Gough, who claimed 19 victims, being more successful than the Glamorgan bowler.
