The build up to the CricInfo Women's Cricket World Cup 2000, to be played in New
Zealand during November and December, began today with the launch of the tournament's
web site, wwc2000.cricinfo.com. CricInfo
has joined forces with New Zealand Cricket to produce a site which will give all 31
World Cup matches comprehensive coverage, including live ball-by-ball scores, making
the tournament the most widely followed in its history.
The site contains historical information on the Women's World Cup tournaments, player
profiles, the draw and venue information, and the latest in women's cricket news.
During the tournament live scorecards will be complemented by written and audio
commentary plus hourly photo updates. The site will host news reports on each match and
interviews with leading players and officials.
Chief Executive of CricInfo New Zealand, Adrian Motherway, said the provision of a
dedicated Internet site would ensure that cricket supporters across the globe had
detailed information about all matches as they are played. "This is a breakthrough for
women's cricket which historically has not received the level of exposure that its
popularity demands. CricInfo is the most popular single sport site in the world and
our decision to provide a dedicated Women's World Cup address is a reflection of the
interest from our patrons."

ABOUT THE CRICINFO WOMEN'S WORLD CUP
CricInfo is the title sponsor: the tournament is to be referred to as the "CricInfo
Women's World Cup 2000".
The tournament, the seventh of its kind, runs from 28th November to 23rd
December 2000 in and around Christchurch, New Zealand.
Hosts New Zealand line up against seven other nations: holders Australia,
England, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Ireland and The Netherlands.
The CricInfo Women's World Cup will be the single biggest international
event hosted by New Zealand Cricket since the 1992 men's world cup. There
will be a total of 31 games including 28 round robin games, two semi-finals
and a final.
CricInfo's web site, wwc2000.cricinfo.com, will provide exclusive ground-breaking
interactive coverage of the tournament, using the complete range of multimedia elements
including video and audio, as well as ball-by-ball text commentary from every game.
The first Women's World Cup was held in England in 1973, and was to be the forerunner
of the first men's World Cup in 1975. Australia (four times) and England (twice) have
won the previous six Women's World Cup tournaments.
The last final, at Eden Gardens in Calcutta, was attended by more than 80,000 people.
All matches in the CricInfo Women's World Cup 2000 will be played at three venues
in Christchurch - BIL Oval, Lincoln Green at Lincoln University, and the Hagley Park
Oval.
The opening game of the CricInfo Women's World Cup will be a top-of-the-table clash
between the defending champions, Australia, and hosts New Zealand on November 29th.
