Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 10:30am local time (2130 GMT)

welcome to Lincoln No. 3 on the Lincoln University campus in
Canterbury for match 5 of the World Series of Women's Cricket
        between New Zealand and England
it's a magnificent day weather-wise, not even the smallest puff of
cloud in the sky, blue for as far as the eye can see, and it's
already warming up beautifully, excellent for cricket-watching,
though the players comfort levels may soon get a bit toasty
England have won the toss and chosen to bat first on a fresh pitch,
a touch green, but they tend to be crackers for batting here at
        Lincoln anyway
England have made just the one change, with Laura Spragg coming
into the side for Dawn Holden who is made 12th man, while New
Zealand have rested the slightly injured Nicola Payne and Louise
Milliken (12th man today) and in comes Michelle Lynch and Aimee
        Mason
the players make their way on to the field and it'll be Charlotte
Edwards to take first strike to Nicola Browne from the City End,
with Arran Thompson at the non-striker's end
0.1 Browne to Edwards, one run, shortish ball on off stump, leans
forward, neatly tapping it down in close on the leg side, smartly
running a quick single with the shot as mid on has to scoot in to
        field
0.2 Browne to Thompson, one run, and Thompson is underway first ball
also, fullish ball straying on to the legs, clipped away along the
        ground out towards long leg
0.3 Browne to Edwards, legbye: one run, three balls, three runs, solid
start, Browne again drifts into the legs on a full length, turned
away just behind square on the leg side from the pad
0.4 Browne to Thompson, wide: no run, full and straying down the leg
side, tries to flick it fine but misses, signalled wide by umpire
        Watkin
0.4 Browne to Thompson, no run, better line and length at last, fullish
and just outside off stump, Thompson leans well forward, quietly
defending into the covers where Drumm fields
0.5 Browne to Thompson, no run, good length ball outside off stump,
Thompson pads up to it but is caught a little by surprise by some
sharp seam movement back in, rapped on the front knee and brings a
shout for lbw, umpire Watkin says no
0.6 Browne to Thompson, no run, full and straight, props well forward
in defence, again taken on the pad, a more strained shout for lbw
        this time, again declined

full, straight ball, taken on the pad and rebounds away to point
36.4 CE Taylor to Mason, FOUR, oooh! another boundary but far more
streaky this time, fullish ball outside off stump, invites the

        and still makes it
all the way to the rope
36.5 CE Taylor to Mason, legbye: one run, fullish ball angling on the

        but straight to point
38.5 Spragg to Mason, bye: one run, oooh! shortish ball cutting back

        concede a bye, two needed
38.6 Spragg to McGlashan, one run, full and straight, firmly driven up

39.1 Connor to McGlashan, one run, shortish ball sits up, powerfully
swung away through backward square leg, races away to the
boundary, over the rope but they complete the single first, so
        that's all that counts
New Zealand complete a relatively comfortable 4-wicket victory (in
the end!) with 11.5 overs to spare, and they pick up a bonus point
        for their troubles
it was a scratchy effort from the home side, they should've won far
more comfortably after restricting England to such a modest total,
and particularly so after being 73/0 in the 13th over
but all that really counts in the end is that they got over the
line, thanks to an unbeaten stand of 34 between McGlashan and
Mason to finish it off, off 53 balls, looking pretty solid - New
Zealand's strong lower order batting line-up today proved handy
England can certainly take heart from a fine comeback in the middle
overs, when many would've expected a disheartened outfit would
give up, but it was just the opposite, sending some serious
jitters through the home camp, taking 6-34 in 107 balls
Pearson's comeback spell, and the bowling of Spragg and Harper
        being the most impressive
unfortunately for England, it counts for nought in the end, they
remain anchored to the foot of the table, with no points after
their first three matches - half their competition is complete
New Zealand meanwhile sit nicely on 12 points, with 2 wins from 3
matches, and are in prime position to push for a spot in the
final, against likely opponents Australia, who are to meet India
        here on Saturday
