Date-stamped : 11 Nov95 - 18:29 3NAT-SHJ Match #2: Pakistan v Sri Lanka Sharjah, 12 October 1995 ====> Match Report Sri Lanka go down tamely to Pakistan The Sri Lankans were halted in their victory march by Pakistan who beat them by 82 runs in a Singer Champions Trophy match at the Sharjah Stadium, here today. Chasing Pakistan`s huge score of 264 for 7 in 50 overs the Lan- kans managed only 182 for 8 - conceding victory by 82 runs. None of the Sri Lankan batsmen could get on top of the bowling and dictate terms. On the first day Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 6 runs. Pakistan play the West Indies today in a game that should be keenly contested. Left-armer Aamir Sohail bowled best for Pakistan to take 4 for 22. The Sri Lankan openers Hathurusinghe and Jayasuriya did not seem to be making any attempt to go for the runs. They were not at- tacking but waiting for the loose balls to come along to make the runs. Hathurusinghe was the first to go lbw to Aquib for 11. He was not happy with the decision. The dismissal of Hathurusinghe saw Sri Lanka losing wickets at regular intervals - Jayasuriya went for 24, Gurusinha 19, Aravin- da de Silva 3, Ranatunga 14, Tillekeratne 15, Kaluvitharane for 19 and Kalpage for 22. EXCELLENT START The Pakistanis who won the toss were off to an excellent start with the openers Sohail and Elahi putting on 107. The wicket was good for batting and the openers found no terrors in the Lankan bowling. They went about picking holes in the field placing to keep the score moving at a brisk rate. The Sri Lankan fielding that was brilliant against the West In- dies was somewhat slack and gave away some unnecessary runs. MORE AGGRESSIVE Sohail was the more aggressive and played some exquisite strokes off his legs. Young Elahi showed a lot of confidence in his innings and played strokes all-round the wicket. After the openers went Elahi for 50 and Sohail for 85, the dash- ing Inzamam put his batting act on display hitting a quick 69 which included 3 huge sixes. Of the other batsmen only Raja 12 and Anwar 14 entered double figures. Of the Sri Lanka bowlers Dharmasena had 2 for 43 and Muralith- eran 2 for 51. MAHANAMA OUT Roshan Mahanama who made a grand century (101) against the West Indies and was chosen `Man-of-the-Match did not take the field as he had not recovered from a groin injury. Hathurusinha was drafted into the Sri Lanka team. Openers Aamir Sohail and Salim Elahi laid the base with a 107-run stand for the first wicket by the 24th over. Big- hitting Inzamam ul Haq, one of the few successes in Pakistan`s recent test and one day series loss to Sri Lanka, built on it with a dazzling 69 off 59 balls. The Sri Lankans, who defeated the West Indies in the opening match of the three-nation tournament on Wednesday, need to score at 5.3 runs an over to win the match. Elahi, 19 who scored a century on debut against the Sri Lan- kans earlier this month, made 50 in only his fourth one- day international. The experienced Sohail contributed 85 before he was caught behind trying to cut off-spinner Muttiah Murlitharan in the 37th over. Sri Lanka fought back by removing skipper Rameez Raja and Saeed Anwar cheaply, but Inzamam launched a blistering attack in the traditional end of innings free hitting to boost Pakistan`s score. The lanky Inzamam smote a four and three sixes -- one of them over the roof of the stadium at long-off against spinner Sanath Jayasuriya -- before he was seventh out in the penultimate over. Pakistan added 65 runs in the final 10 overs, 15 of them com- ing in the 50th over off seamer Pramodaya Wickramasinghe through tailenders Somerset`s Mushtaq Ahmed and Surrey`s Waqar Younis. Spinners Muttiah Murlitharan and Kumara Dharmasena claimed two wickets each with steady spells in the middle overs. Pakistan are without ace seamer Wasim Akram, who opted out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury. Source :: Sapa-AFP Contributed by Donald (eitan@rucus.ru.ac.za)
